For my Timebased Typography 2 class at the Savannah College of Art and Design, we were assigned the task of illustrating a music video by primarily relying on type. My friend, Kodac Harrison, was moderating poetry slams at the Sentient Bean Cafe in Savannah. I have done several live music videos with Kodac during the 1980′s. He agreed to let me use “Castros Cuban” from his album “Portraits & Passages”. It is a story about a box of cigars that Fidel Castro gave to former president Jimmy Carter. President Carters son, Chip Carter, gave one of the cigars to Kodac to share with his band at a rehearsal. This is a spoken word piece with guitar music by Kodac. You can visit Kodac’s website at- www.mindspring.com Artistically, I used rubber stamps and ink to animate the words to this project. I wanted to follow a style that was reminiscent of the pre-Castro days of Cuba when cigars were manufactured in Cuba. I used brown wrapping paper and balsa wood as the background textures. These are the materials used to package, label and ship cigars. With this style, I created a feeling for the viewer so they can visualize the story in their mind that is spoken by Kodac Harrison. I scanned all of my art into Photoshop and animated it to the sound track using Adobe After Effects. I appreciate the generosity of Kodac Harrison for allowing me to use his audio for my project.
